Chris Catena - Re-Discovery

by Chris Catena

about

While CHRIS CATENA just released the debut album of his new band Rock City Tribe, this 2020 he’s got reissued, expanded and remastered his Escape Music 2008 album ‘Discovery’, now re-titled ”Re-Discovery” and featuring a new artwork as well.
The Italian singer has through his 30-year long career worked with a great number of legendary musicians, and they, in return, play all over ”Re-Discovery”. Timothy Drury (Whitesnake), Earl Slick, Victor Indrizzo, Carmine Appice,Tony Franklin (Blue Murder) among many others, paint this record alongside with the fabulous voice of Chris Catena.
A lot of exciting, rocking music to enjoy here.

After the ‘DJ Rock Introduction’, the music starts with the atmospheric ‘Theme from Discovery’ a very beautiful piece of music full of keys and synths. Then you’re tossed out in the energetic riffs of the song “Freedom Bound.” This is one of the heaviest songs on the album, but does also feature some great melodies. With this one, the first proper song on the record, Chris really show what a fantastic singer he is.
At times, he sounds a little similar to Don Wolf from the Canadian Melodic Rock band White Wolf. There’s also some very outstanding guitar work on this song, which is the very highlight of this record.

All tracks rock with style, some with a progressive touch, yet always riff-based with melody. One that sticks out from the mass is “The Spacefreak King.” This is a very exciting song with a lot of space-like sounds beneath the catchy melodies. You can just imagine how fun it must have been to work on this tune in the studio.

There are more space related songs on the record, “The Space (Hello, Can You Hear Me Calling?)” as example. This one is almost eight-minutes long and has a very atmospheric sound to it. It’s slow and heavy, but yet it has a lot of amusing melodies.
Again, there are some outstanding guitar solos appearing. This time it is with the amazing skills of Swede Daniel Palmqvist (Novak, The Murder of My Sweet).
Another highlight for me is the semi-ballad / midtempo “Back To Life / Coming Home”, very emotional and melodic, even with some AOR feeling here and there.

Discovery is a very enjoyable record and deserves a lot of positive words and credits. It’s a collection of brilliant, elaborated rock music. Production is great too, especially the way guitars and keyboards blend with Catena’s elastic leads.
If you’re a fan of music that has a fine mixture of heavy and soft elements, clever arrangements, and beautiful melodies, or just a fan of meaty Melodic Hard Rock in general, you need to check out ”Re-Discovery”.
Highly Recommended
